Care in the community was intruduced into the UK during Margraret Thathcher's reign of power. It was sold to the public as a more liberal way of helping people with mental health problems. However the reality is very differant.
At presant the Metropolitan Police are setting up a special squad to deal with psychiatric patients who are cracking up and causing a disturbance, this is because people who are ill are being left to rot on the streets.
Mentaly ill and mentally disturbed (ie Personality Disorder) people are often living on their own even if thay are suicidal. Many peopel end up in prison after comitting petty crimes. Some peopel are whairehoused "on the landing" and have to deal with physical and psychological intimedation. Some end up in the hospital wing, althouge safer thay will probably be banged up 24 houres a day. Prisons exist to punish people and persuade them to not to break the law, not as a dumping ground for the mentaly ill. In the hospital wing thay will not have the same legal rights as people in mental hospitals. In a civilized society sutch people would be automaticaly hospitalized.
Another favourate dumping place is the night shelter, once in a night shelter a mentaly ill person beomes a social problem rather than a medical problem. Like prisons night shelters are dangerous places. |
